Regulatory Food Law and Food Information

The main purpose of food law is to ensure a safe food supply and to protect consumers’ interests in relation to food. It is a food business operator’s legal responsibility to make sure that your business complies with food law and produces safe food.

Food hygiene legislation lays down rules which food business operators must comply with in order to supply safe food. These hygiene rules apply to all food businesses. Other pieces of food legislation deal with issues such as labelling, marketing standards, contaminants, additives and food contact materials (e.g. packaging).

Food information means information concerning a food and made available to the final consumer by means of a label, other accompanying material, or any other means including modern technology tools (such as a website or facebook) or verbal communication. Food information must be clear and accurate and not mislead the consumer. It must be legible and easy to understand. Food products sold in Ireland, including imported foods, must be labelled in English (with optional labelling in Irish in addition).

Chef Consulting Services can help you keep your business compliant with current legislation.
